James Van Vossel, born in 1977, studied furniture design at VOMO (Thomas More University College) in Mechelen. After graduating with distinction, he founded his studio, JAMES, in 2006 and became a co-founder of FOX & FREEZE – a creative collaboration with Tom De Vrieze. Van Vossel designs furniture, products, lighting and fashion accessories, whilst exploring the potential applications of various materials in depth. “I can’t just sit on a drawing,” says James van Vossel of his working method, and so he develops entire studies using true-to-scale prototypes. In his studio, he also produces some of his designs in limited editions. For the realisation of larger-scale production runs, van Vossel works as a freelance designer with various national and international companies. His designs are characterised by enormous diversity and the way in which van Vossel approaches design solutions through clever gimmicks.
